New
Students
HOME
Welcome!
- New graduate students may consult with the Graduate
Deputy Chair, Dr. Dwight Kincaid, on all issues. Students having advisors at the NYBG should
also consult
with the Director of Graduate Studies, who is presently Dr. Larry Kelly. Students
having Lehman thesis advisors can also consult with the NYBG Graduate
Director to obtain access to NYBG facilities. See faculty
listing for faculty contact information.
- The first year courses should be chosen to
prepare you for the First
Level Exam which is given in June after the first year. If you have
sufficient coursework and background, you may take this exam before the start of your first year.
Read the student
handbook for required forms and see the Graduate
Deputy Chair for signature.
- If you wish to compete for adjunct teaching, contact the Lehman
Department of Biological Sciences Chair, and attend the
group meeting before the beginning of each semester which is when the actual
teaching assignments are made. The Department
and Chair's office are located on the second floor of Davis
Hall (room 217).
- If not already done, start talking to
potential faculty
advisors; it's never too early to begin thinking about your thesis topic
and related coursework.
- See the Plant
Sciences Program Chair, Dr. Elli Wurtzel, for advice on applying for external
predoctoral fellowships, research, or field support.
- See Student
FAQs to learn about getting ID cards for library access, to register for consortium
courses, etc.
- Subscribe to the student
listserve to get up-to-date program information.
- Arrange for a tour of the Lehman Department
of Biological Sciences to learn about the available research facilities. Contact any Lehman Faculty member
or the Plant
Sciences Chair to make arrangements.
- There is a Plant
Sciences Advisory
Committee consisting of faculty and students. Contact members to get
additional program information. Student members may be particularly helpful
in providing suggestions as you begin to get settled in the program.
- Visit "useful
links" to get information about travel
and living in New York City (such as housing, places to eat, and fun
things to do when you need a break!).
